March 9, 2022 is the no smoking day in Hertfordshire, UK. On this day, the Hertfordshire Council (HCC) provides a free e-cigarette entry kit to adults over the age of 18 who fail to quit smoking to help smokers who want to quit smoking.
Since the prevalence of covid-19, more and more people want HCC to provide smoking cessation support. Since April 2020, more than 4300 people have received help from HCC, and more than half of them have quit smoking permanently.
Steven nage resident Luke French is 38 years old and has smoked for more than 20 years. In 2020, he finally summoned up his courage and stepped forward to seek the support of HCC health improvement services.
In December, I'll die of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, just like my grandma said, "I'll die of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 2019.".
"After that, there was covid-19 epidemic, which was seriously harmful to smokers. I called my doctor and she introduced me to seek HCC services."
With the help of HCC, Luke reduced smoking and tried to maintain the habit of quitting smoking day. His smoking cessation consultant suggested that he could further try e-cigarettes.
"I've found it easy to quit smoking with e-cigarettes," Luke said. "Since using e-cigarettes, I've stopped craving smoking and gradually reduced my nicotine intake. I wish I had been smoking e-cigarettes a few years ago.".
Just two days after quitting smoking, Luke felt clearer lungs and more energetic. "I think life is more sunny and my children are happier. They don't have to worry about my premature death from smoking."
"For all those who are considering or trying to quit smoking, I strongly recommend using e-cigarettes as soon as possible."
More than 100000 adults now smoke in Hertfordshire, killing more than 1400 people in the county each year.
"We want Hertfordshire residents to live a healthy lifestyle and live a better life from now on," said Maurice bright MBE, Hertfordshire executive Commissioner for public health and community safety
"Compared with tobacco, e-cigarette is obviously much less harmful to life and health, and it is likely to help smokers quit smoking. We will provide e-cigarette starter kit to residents who want to quit smoking to provide the best possible support."
"With our help, your chances of successfully quitting smoking have tripled. We'll say to anyone who wants to quit smoking on this no smoking day, don't give up - every time you try, you're one step closer to success."
